Frequently asked questions
What is an ISO country code?
ISO 3166-1 defines standard codes for countries in three forms: a two-letter code (alpha-2, such as SK), a three-letter code (alpha-3, such as SVK) and a three-digit numeric code (such as 703). They are used everywhere from web domains to shipping and banking.
What is the difference between alpha-2 and alpha-3 codes?
The alpha-2 code is two letters (used for ccTLDs and most software), while the alpha-3 code is three letters and is more mnemonic. Both identify the same country, so SK and SVK both mean Slovakia.
