What does the flag of Russia mean?
Peter the Great introduced Russia's white-blue-red tricolour in the 1690s for the country's new navy and merchant fleet, modelling it on the Dutch flag he had encountered, and it was adopted as the civil ensign in 1705. The Russian state has never fixed a single official meaning for the three colours. A reading dating from the reign of Alexander III assigned white to nobility and frankness, blue to faithfulness and honesty, and red to courage and love, while a common folk interpretation tied the colours to the historic regions of White, Little and Great Russia. The tricolour was set aside during the Soviet era and readopted after the failed August coup of 1991, with its proportions and shades fixed by decree in 1993.
