What does the flag of Morocco mean?

Morocco flew a plain red flag for centuries under its ruling dynasties, a sharifian red associated with the Alaouite dynasty that has ruled since the 17th century and, more broadly, with claimed descent from the Prophet Muhammad. On 17 November 1915, Sultan Yusef added the green interlaced pentagram at the centre, known as the Seal of Solomon, specifically to distinguish Morocco's flag from the many other plain red banners then flown at sea. Green is the traditional colour of Islam, and the star's five points are commonly read as standing for the Five Pillars of Islam, while the red field is linked to bravery and, in the government's own telling, to the blood of the ancestors and national unity.
