What does the flag of Cameroon mean?

Cameroon flies the Pan-African colours in a French-style vertical tricolour: red is the colour of unity, yellow stands for the sun and for the savannas of the country's north, and green for the forests of the south. The gold five-pointed star centred on the red band is known as the star of unity. The plain green-red-yellow tricolour was established by law in 1957; two stars were added in 1961 to mark the federation of East and West Cameroon after British Southern Cameroons joined the republic, and in 1975 they were replaced by today's single central star when Cameroon became a unitary state.
