What does the flag of Croatia mean?

Croatia's red, white and blue date from 1848 and combine the heraldic colours of the historic kingdoms that make up the country: red and white from Croatia, blue and white from Slavonia, and blue from Dalmatia, a combination that also matches the Pan-Slavic colours. At the centre sits the sahovnica, the red-and-white checkerboard shield that has been Croatia's emblem for centuries, topped by a crown of five smaller shields bearing the historical arms of Central Croatia, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia. The current flag was adopted on 21 December 1990, shortly before independence, replacing the red star that had occupied the same spot in the Yugoslav era.
