What does the flag of France mean?
Blue and red were the traditional colors of the city of Paris, worn by the Paris militia during the storming of the Bastille in 1789. White, described by the Marquis de Lafayette as the ancient French color, was added between them to fuse the new revolutionary colors with the monarchy's own, turning the flag into a symbol of national unity rather than one faction's banner. The colors are often linked today to the revolutionary motto liberte, egalite, fraternite, though that reading came after the tricolore was already in use rather than shaping its original design.
