What does the flag of Angola mean?
Angola's flag was adopted on 11 November 1975, the day the country became independent from Portugal, and Annex I of the constitution spells out what it means: black for Africa and red for the blood shed by Angolans during the colonial period, the war of independence and the defence of the country. The yellow emblem in the centre is a machete crossed with a half-cogwheel and crowned by a five-pointed star, standing respectively for peasants, agriculture and the war of independence, for workers and industry, and for international solidarity and progress; the yellow itself represents Angola's wealth. The 1975 wording was more explicitly revolutionary and has since been softened: 'revolution' became 'defence of the country', and 'internationalism' became 'international solidarity'. The vexillologist Whitney Smith noted that the emblem echoes the star, hammer and sickle of the Soviet flag.
