What does the flag of Ukraine mean?
Ukraine's blue and yellow are explained by Ukrainian and international vexillological sources as a picture of the landscape itself: blue for the sky over the country's vast plains, yellow for the wheat that grows in its fields beneath. The colors were adopted at a meeting in Lviv during the revolutions of 1848 and flew as the flag of short-lived Ukrainian republics between 1918 and 1920, before being suppressed under Soviet rule. They were declared the national flag again in 1992, after Ukraine's independence, restoring a combination that traces back roughly two centuries.
