What does the flag of Cuba mean?

Cuba's flag was designed in 1849 by the independence leader Narciso Lopez together with the poet Miguel Teurbe Tolon, and became the national flag when the republic was established on 20 May 1902. Its three blue stripes represent the three departments into which colonial Cuba was then divided, the two white stripes the purity of the patriotic cause, and the red triangle strength and constancy, a shape historians also link to the Masonic symbolism of equality found on several flags of the former Spanish empire. The single white star, which gives the flag its name La Estrella Solitaria ('the Lone Star'), completes the design.
