What does the flag of Burundi mean?

A white saltire divides Burundi's flag into red panels at top and bottom and green panels left and right, with a white disc at the crossing bearing three red six-pointed stars outlined in green. The white stands for peace, the green for the nation's hopes for future development, and the red for the suffering endured during the struggle for freedom. The three stars carry three meanings at once: the three ethnic groups of Burundi, the Hutu, the Twa and the Tutsi; the three words of the national motto Ubumwe, Ibikorwa, Amajambere, meaning unity, work and progress; and the loyalty citizens pledge to God, king and country. The flag was adopted after independence from Belgium on 1 July 1962, and its proportions changed from 2:3 to 3:5 on 27 September 1982.
