What does the flag of Italy mean?

When Italy's Jacobin founders chose the colors for the first Italian tricolour in 1797, they picked green instead of the blue used on the French flag it was modeled on because, in their words, green stood for nature and, by extension, natural rights and social equality. White and red were carried over directly from the French design without a separate meaning attached to either at the time, and no Italian law has ever fixed an official interpretation of all three colors together. Over the following century the tricolour became a unifying patriotic symbol during Italian unification, independent of any single reading of its individual colors.

Flags with the same colours as Italy

11 other national flags use exactly the same set of colour families (red, green, white). Similar colours are the most common reason flags get mistaken for one another, though colour alone says nothing about layout.
