What does the flag of Hungary mean?
Hungary's red, white and green come from the country's historical coat of arms, which has carried the same colours since the mid-15th century, and the tricolour form was adopted during the 1848 revolution in imitation of the French flag. Two folk readings of the colours circulated in the 19th century: red for strength, white for faithfulness and green for hope, or alternatively red for the blood spilled for the fatherland, white for freedom and green for Hungary's pastures. The 2012 constitution made the first reading official, defining the colours as strength, fidelity and hope. The plain tricolour, without any coat of arms, has been the national flag since 1957.
