What does the flag of Colombia mean?

Colombia's yellow, blue and red are officially explained with yellow for the country's gold and natural wealth, blue for its seas, rivers and sky, and red for the blood shed in the struggle for independence. The design descends from the flag of Gran Colombia created around 1801 by the Venezuelan patriot Francisco de Miranda, who tied his choice of the three primary colours to a colour theory he attributed to the German writer Goethe; because Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela all emerged from Gran Colombia, the three share this common tricolour. Colombia fixed its current design, with the yellow band filling the top half, in 1861.
