What does the flag of Sweden mean?
Sweden's blue and yellow are drawn from the country's royal coat of arms of 1442, a blue shield divided by a gold cross pattee, itself building on a blue-and-gold combination used in Swedish royal heraldry since at least 1275. The oldest surviving depictions of a yellow cross on blue cloth date to the early 16th century, under King Gustav I, and the design's first legal description followed in a royal warrant of 1562. A separate medieval legend credits King Eric IX with seeing a golden cross against the sky during a 12th-century crusade and adopting it as his banner, though the coat-of-arms origin is the better documented account.
