What does the flag of Ireland mean?

The tricolour's colors were first combined in September 1830, when Emelia Eleanor Hamilton of Dublin made a green-white-orange cockade as a gift marking the July Revolution in France. Its meaning was fixed nearly two decades later, in April 1848, when Young Irelander Thomas Francis Meagher explained the flag to a Dublin crowd: green for the Irish Catholic and Gaelic tradition, orange for the Protestant supporters of William of Orange, and white in the center for what he called 'a lasting truce' between them, so that 'the hands of the Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants may be clasped in heroic brotherhood.'

Flags with the same colours as Ireland

3 other national flags use exactly the same set of colour families (orange, green, white). Similar colours are the most common reason flags get mistaken for one another, though colour alone says nothing about layout.
