What does the flag of Haiti mean?

Haiti's flag is what remains of the French tricolour after independence. On 18 May 1803, the last day of the Congress of Arcahaie, Jean-Jacques Dessalines tore the white centre out of a French flag and discarded it because of its association with white Europeans, then had his god-daughter Catherine Flon sew the blue and red bands together. Blue is recorded as standing for the country's Black population and red for its mixed-race population. The state flag adds a white panel bearing the coat of arms: a trophy of weapons on a green hill and a royal palm crowned with the Cap of Liberty, above the motto L'Union fait la Force, 'unity is strength'. The design goes back to 1806 under President Alexandre Petion and was most recently readopted on 25 February 2012.
