What does the flag of China mean?

The People's Republic's flag was designed by Zeng Liansong, a Shanghai accountant, and adopted in 1949. Its single large star represents the Communist Party, which Zeng described as the 'great savior' of the Chinese people, while the four smaller stars originally stood for the four social classes identified in Mao Zedong's theory of New Democracy: the working class, the peasantry, the urban petite bourgeoisie and the national bourgeoisie. China's 1990 National Flag Law deliberately leaves the stars' meaning broader in its official wording, describing them only as symbols of the People's Republic of China, without restating the original class-based reading.

How China compares

Flags with the same colours as China

6 other national flags use exactly the same set of colour families (red). Similar colours are the most common reason flags get mistaken for one another, though colour alone says nothing about layout.
