What does the flag of Kazakhstan mean?
Kazakhstan's turquoise field stands for the endless sky and for water, and carries religious weight for Turkic peoples as a sign of cultural and ethnic unity. The golden sun above the centre has 32 rays, one for each of the 32 Turkic ethnicities, and the rays are shaped like grain, the basis of abundance and prosperity. Beneath it flies a steppe eagle, a bird that has appeared on Kazakh tribal banners for centuries and stands for freedom, power and the flight into the future. The gold band down the hoist is the qoshqar-muiiz, 'the horns of the ram', a traditional national ornament. The flag was designed by Shaken Niyazbekov and adopted on 4 June 1992; the ornament was red at first and was changed to gold the following month.
