What does the flag of Japan mean?

Japan's flag, officially called Nisshoki ('flag of the sun') and known popularly as Hinomaru ('circle of the sun'), depicts the sun as a plain red disc on white. The design reflects Japan's long-standing description of itself as the 'Land of the Rising Sun,' a name that made sense from the perspective of mainland Asia, from which the sun appears to rise out of the Japanese archipelago. The sun also carries deeper meaning through Japan's imperial tradition, in which the ruling family is legendarily descended from the sun goddess Amaterasu.
