What does the flag of Belarus mean?

Belarus flies an unequal red over green bicolour with a red-on-white ornamental pattern down the hoist. No official interpretation of the colours exists; the explanation usually quoted comes from President Alexander Lukashenko, who has described the red as freedom and the sacrifice of the nation's forefathers and the green as life. The design is a modification of the 1951 flag of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic: the hammer, sickle and red star were removed and the hoist ornament was reversed from white-on-red to red-on-white. It was approved in a referendum in May 1995 and adjusted again in 2012.

6 other national flags use exactly the same set of colour families (red, green). Similar colours are the most common reason flags get mistaken for one another, though colour alone says nothing about layout.
