What does the flag of Comoros mean?

The Comoros flag, adopted on 23 December 2001, gives each of the four islands claimed by the country its own stripe: yellow for Moheli, white for Mayotte (administered by France but claimed by the Comoros), red for Anjouan and blue for Grande Comore. The green triangle at the hoist, together with the white crescent it carries, symbolises Islam, the country's main religion, and the four stars beside the crescent stand for the same four islands. The crescent-and-four-stars motif has appeared in various forms on Comorian flags since independence in 1975; the 2001 design added the four stripes so that each island is represented twice.
