What does the flag of United Arab Emirates mean?

The United Arab Emirates' flag uses the four Pan-Arab colors also seen on the flags of many other Arab states: green for growth and prosperity, white for peace and purity, black for dignity, and red for the sacrifices made by the country's people. Designed in 1971 by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, then a 19-year-old, the flag was chosen from more than a thousand entries submitted for a national competition held as the UAE was forming as a federation of seven emirates, and it was adopted on 2 December 1971, the country's founding date.
