What does the flag of Norway mean?

Norway's tricolor was designed in 1821 by Fredrik Meltzer, a member of the Storting, who rejected an earlier proposal because its colors were too close to Denmark's flag. He proposed red, white and blue instead, colors he called those that 'now denote freedom, such as we have seen in the French flag of freedom, and still see in that of the Dutch and Americans.' The choice also carried domestic political weight: red echoed Norway's centuries-long union with Denmark, while blue was associated with the newer union with Sweden, so combining both, arranged as a Nordic cross, was a deliberate compromise between the two factions.
