What does the flag of Malaysia mean?
Malaysia's flag, the Jalur Gemilang ('Stripes of Glory'), carries 14 stripes and a 14-point star representing the equal status of the country's 13 states and the federal government. The crescent stands for Islam, the state religion, and the yellow of the crescent and star is the royal colour of the Malay rulers, while the blue canton symbolises the unity of the Malaysian people. The flag was designed by Mohamed Hamzah, a 29-year-old architect, and first raised in 1950 with 11 stripes; the current 14-stripe version dates from the formation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963, and the name Jalur Gemilang was bestowed in 1997.
