What does the flag of Ethiopia mean?
Ethiopia's green, yellow and red carried symbolic importance in the country long before they were arranged into a flag, and the modern tricolour was ordered by Emperor Menelik II on 11 October 1897, a year after Ethiopia decisively defeated Italy at the Battle of Adwa. His version ran red, yellow and green from top to bottom and bore the first letter of his own name on the central stripe; the letter was dropped after his death in 1913, and the colour order was flipped for reasons that were never recorded. The present flag, with the national emblem of a golden pentagram on a blue disc at the centre, dates from 31 October 1996. Ethiopia marks Flag Day on the first Monday of Tikimt to commemorate the 1897 adoption.
