What does the flag of India mean?

India's saffron, white and green were given their modern, secular meaning by philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan when he explained the flag to the Constituent Assembly in 1947: saffron for renunciation, meaning leaders should be indifferent to material gain; white for 'the path of truth' guiding conduct; and green for the country's relationship to its soil and plant life. The navy-blue Ashoka Chakra at the center, a 24-spoke wheel replacing the spinning wheel used on earlier Congress flags, represents the wheel of dharma. As Radhakrishnan put it, the wheel 'denotes motion,' because 'there is death in stagnation, there is life in movement.'

How India compares

Flags with the same colours as India

3 other national flags use exactly the same set of colour families (orange, green, white). Similar colours are the most common reason flags get mistaken for one another, though colour alone says nothing about layout.
