What does the flag of Poland mean?
Poland's white and red are heraldic colors rather than invented symbols: white for the White Eagle of the Polish coat of arms, and red for the field it stands on. The same white-on-red combination also appeared on the Pursuer, the coat of arms of Lithuania, so when Poland and Lithuania were joined in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, both nations' arms shared the same two colors, which is why they came to represent the union as a whole. White and red had been associated with Poland since the Middle Ages but were only formally adopted as the national colors in 1831.
