What does the flag of Netherlands mean?
The Dutch flag descends from the orange-white-blue 'Prince's Flag' carried by supporters of William of Orange during the revolt against Spanish rule, first recorded at the siege of Leiden in 1574. Red gradually replaced orange at sea sometime between about 1630 and 1660, a practical shift historians link to the House of Orange's declining political fortunes at the time, though the older orange version never fully disappeared and re-emerges on royal occasions. A royal decree of 19 February 1937 finally settled the long-running debate by fixing the flag's official colors in law as red, white and blue.
