What does the flag of Singapore mean?

Singapore's flag was adopted on 3 December 1959, created in two months by a committee under deputy prime minister Toh Chin Chye as the colony gained self-government. Its symbolism is fixed in law: red stands for universal fellowship and the equality of man, and white for pervading and everlasting purity and virtue. The crescent moon represents a young nation on the ascendant, and the five stars the ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality; the pairing of crescent and stars was also chosen so that both the Malay-Muslim and Chinese communities would see themselves in the new flag.
