What does the flag of Cyprus mean?

Cyprus's flag, in use since 16 August 1960, was deliberately designed to be neutral: the constitution required a design that avoided the blue of Greece, the red of Turkey, and any cross or crescent. The island's silhouette is rendered in copper-orange for the copper ore deposits from which Cyprus may take its very name, and it floats above two crossed olive branches on a white field, both symbols of hoped-for peace between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. The design, chosen through a competition, was created by the Turkish Cypriot artist Ismet Guney, and its deliberately peaceful, neutral symbols were meant to express harmony between the island's two communities.
