What does the flag of Mexico mean?
Mexico's coat of arms depicts a golden eagle perched on a nopal cactus, devouring a serpent, a scene drawn from the Aztec (Mexica) foundation legend in which this sign told wandering tribes where to build their capital, Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City. Under Mexican law the eagle must always face toward the green stripe; displaying it any other way is treated as a sign of distress. The meaning of the flag's green, white and red stripes themselves has shifted repeatedly since independence and is not fixed by a single official interpretation today, though the three colors were used on the flags of Mexico's national army from early in its history.
