What does the flag of Bulgaria mean?

Bulgaria's white, green and red tricolour is one of the flags with no recorded symbolism: the 1879 Tarnovo Constitution simply stated in Article 23 that 'the Bulgarian people's flag is three-coloured and consists of white, green and red colours, placed horizontally', and attached no meaning to them. The colour readings that circulate online are folklore rather than law. The flag was first adopted after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 to 1878, when Bulgaria gained de facto independence, and for much of the communist period it carried the state emblem in the canton. The plain tricolour was re-established by the 1991 constitution and confirmed by a law of 1998.
