What does the flag of Germany mean?

Black, red and gold trace back to the uniforms of the Lutzow Free Corps, volunteers who fought Napoleon's forces in black coats with red facings and gold buttons. Student fraternities of the 1810s reinterpreted the combination as a call for German unity, summed up in the phrase that freedom would come out of the blackness of servitude, through bloody battles, to the golden light of freedom. The colors became associated with German liberalism through the 19th century, flew as the flag of the Weimar Republic from 1919, and were restored as the flag of West Germany in 1949 after 12 years under the Nazi flag.
