What does the flag of Israel mean?
The blue stripes on Israel's flag are modeled on the tallit, the traditional Jewish prayer shawl, an idea credited to the Zionist leader David Wolffsohn, who reportedly said, 'We have a flag, and it is blue and white. The tallit with which we wrap ourselves when we pray, that is our symbol.' The six-pointed Star of David at the center, known in Hebrew as the Magen David, had been used as a Jewish symbol since at least the 17th century and was formally adopted by the First Zionist Congress in 1897, decades before it appeared on the state flag adopted in 1948.
