What does the flag of Dominican Republic mean?
The Dominican Republic's flag was designed by Juan Pablo Duarte, the country's founding father, for his secret independence society La Trinitaria, and was first hoisted on 28 February 1844, the day after the war of independence against Haiti began. Its blue stands for liberty, its red for the blood of the nation's heroes, and the white cross dividing them for salvation, reflecting Duarte's Christian ideals. At the centre of the state flag sits the national coat of arms, which contains a Bible open to John 8:31-32 above a cross, together with the motto Dios, Patria, Libertad: God, Fatherland, Liberty.
