Moroni lies on the rocky volcanic western coast of Ngazidja (Grande Comore), at the foot of the active volcano Mount Karthala, whose crater is only about 10 kilometres away.

About Moroni
Moroni has been the capital of Comoros since 1958, when the decision was taken to move the capital of the archipelago to Moroni from Dzaoudzi on Mayotte; Moroni remained the capital when the Comoros became independent.
Before 1958 the territorial capital of the colonial archipelago was Dzaoudzi, on the island of Mayotte, which today remains under French administration.
Moroni's old harbour is small but remains the island's link to the African mainland and the other islands of the Comoros.
The Badjanani Mosque in the old town was originally built in 1427, with its minaret added in 1921.
