How the modes work

The modes climb like a ladder. Easy is the flag quiz, with four options to pick from. Hard is Type the country, with no options at all. Speedrun is typing too, through all 194 flags of the world round with the timer on.

Flag quiz
See a flag and pick its country from four options.
Type the country
See a flag and type the name. Accents and capitals do not matter, and common alternative names count, such as Côte d’Ivoire for Ivory Coast.
Find the flag
See a country name and pick its flag from four.
Capitals quiz
Name the capital of each country, or set Ask for to the country and name the country of each capital.
Learn mode
Practice without an end: every flag sits in one of 5 boxes, and a missed flag comes back within 5 questions.

Lookalikes swaps the random wrong answers for flags with the same layout and overlapping colours, worked out from the flag files (how the quiz picks its answers). Territories adds dependencies and other territories to a continent or the world. Timer shows a running clock, and Classroom view puts a big flag and big answers on screen for a whole class, played with the keys 1 to 4 and Space to show the answer.

Every round carries a seed in its address, so Copy challenge link gives a friend the same flags in the same order. After a full round the link also carries your score and time, so your friend plays against your ghost. Print this quiz turns the round you just played into a worksheet with an answer key.

Use it in class

  • On the whiteboard. Classroom view puts one big flag and four big answers on screen for the whole room, played with the keys 1 to 4.
  • On paper. Every region has a worksheet with an answer key, and Print this quiz turns the round you just played into one.
  • Nothing to set up. No account, no sign-up and no adverts, so it opens straight away on a school laptop.

Frequently asked questions

How many flags are in the quiz?
A world round draws from the 194 sovereign states that have a capital: 10 or 25 flags at a time, or all 194 in one go. Switch on Territories and the pool grows to all 250 flags in the Flagdex catalogue, dependencies and other territories included.
Can I practise only Europe?
Yes. Pick Europe in the Region menu, or open the Europe flag quiz, which starts with Europe's 45 sovereign states and lookalike options. Africa, Asia, Americas, Oceania, Caribbean, South America, Middle East and Eastern Europe work the same way, and a shared link keeps the region.
Is there a learn mode?
Yes. Learn mode keeps asking without a fixed end and sorts every flag into one of 5 boxes. A right answer moves a flag up one box, a wrong answer sends it back to box 1, and a missed flag comes back within 5 questions. Flags in the low boxes come up most often. The boxes are saved in this browser only.
Do I need an account?
No. There are no accounts and no sign-up. The quiz runs in your browser, and your collection, learn boxes and FlagDaily streak stay on this device. The Clear all button under Your data on this device removes them.
How many flags are there in the world by Flagdex's count?
250. The usual answer of 195 countries counts the 193 United Nations member states plus the 2 UN observer states, the Holy See and Palestine, each with a national flag of its own. Flagdex follows the ISO 3166-1 code list and adds Kosovo under the user-assigned code XK, so its catalogue holds those 195 flags plus 55 territories and other areas with a flag of their own.
