About Dushanbe

Dushanbe has been the capital of Tajikistan since 1924, when the town was made the capital of the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, commencing its rapid growth; it remained the capital of independent Tajikistan.

From the 17th to the early 20th century Dushanbe grew as a market village, controlled at times by the Beg of Hisor, Balkh and finally Bukhara; its name literally means 'Monday', and until 1929 the city was known in Russian as Dyushambe, then until 1961 as Stalinabad.

The city is divided into four districts: Ismail Samani, Avicenna, Ferdowsi and Shah Mansur.
