About Yerevan

Yerevan is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, founded as the Urartian fortress of Erebuni by King Argishti I in 782 BC.

Yerevan has been the capital of Armenia since 1918, when it became the capital of the first independent Republic of Armenia; it remained the capital through the Soviet era and after independence in 1991.

Home to over a third of Armenia's people, Yerevan is the country's largest city and its political, cultural and economic centre.

It is nicknamed the 'Pink City' after the colour of the volcanic tuff stone used in many of its buildings.
