About Skopje

The area has been continuously inhabited since at least the Chalcolithic period. The Roman city on the site, Scupi, was founded in the late 1st century under Domitian and was abandoned in 518 after an earthquake destroyed it.

Skopje is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.

The city covers 571 square kilometres and takes in rural as well as urban areas.
