Podgorica lies in central Montenegro at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers, where the southern foothills of the Dinaric Alps meet the northernmost part of the Zeta Plain.

About Podgorica

The Romans established a settlement on the site, known as Birziminium.

Podgorica has been the capital of Montenegro since 2006, when Montenegro regained independence; the city had already been designated capital of the Socialist Republic of Montenegro in 1946, under the name Titograd, which it carried until 1992.

Cetinje served as capital and seat of the throne for much of Montenegrin history, and it still preserves much of the national cultural and historic heritage.

Nearly a third of Montenegro's population lives in Podgorica, which makes it the country's primate city.

Owing to its central location, Podgorica is the hub of Montenegro's rail and road networks, and its airport is the country's main gateway for international air travel.
