The city was established in 698 AD.

The Medina at the city's core is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. East of it, through the Sea Gate (Bab el Bhar, or Porte de France), begins the Ville Nouvelle, the modern quarter laid out along the grand Avenue Habib Bourguiba.

Greater Tunis, usually called Grand Tunis, has around 2.7 million inhabitants.

As of 2020 Tunis was the third-largest city in the Maghreb, after Casablanca and Algiers, and the fifteenth-largest in the Arab world.
