About Honiara

Honiara has been the capital of Solomon Islands since 1952, when it became the new administrative centre of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate, after which the town began to develop and grow.

The airport area east of Honiara was the site of the Battle for Henderson Field of 1942, part of the Guadalcanal Campaign of World War II, from which the United States emerged victorious over Japan.

In 1983 a self-governing capital territory of 22 square kilometres was proclaimed around Honiara, though the city also remains the capital of Guadalcanal Province.
