The city was first mentioned between 1112 and 1125 and received town privileges between 1220 and 1243.
A Roman city called Emona stood on the site in antiquity, and Ljubljana was later the historical capital of Carniola, one of the Slovene-inhabited lands of the Habsburg monarchy.
