About Majuro
Majuro supplanted Jaluit as capital when the Republic of the Marshall Islands formed after breaking away from the Federated States of Micronesia in 1978; it is where the Nitijela, the country's parliament, meets.
Majuro has been inhabited for at least 2,000 years, hosted a Protestant mission and copra trading stations in the 1870s, and was annexed by the German Empire in 1885 before Japanese and American administration.
The main population centre, Delap-Uliga-Djarrit, is made up of three contiguous motus and had 23,156 people at the 2021 census.
