What is the capital of Honduras?
Tegucigalpa lies in a mountain-ringed valley in the southern-central highlands of Honduras, about 990 metres above sea level, in the department of Francisco Morazan.
Tegucigalpa is the capital and seat of government of Honduras, a role it has held since 1880. Honduras itself has an estimated population of 11,005,850 (2025).
Tegucigalpa is also the largest city in Honduras, which is the usual arrangement, though it is far from universal: see the countries where capital and largest city differ.

About Tegucigalpa
The Spanish claim to the settlement dates from 29 September 1578.
Tegucigalpa has been the capital of Honduras since 1880, when President Marco Aurelio Soto moved the seat of government here from Comayagua on 30 October 1880.
Comayagua was the Honduran capital until 1880, when President Marco Aurelio Soto transferred the seat of government to Tegucigalpa.
Tegucigalpa shares capital status with its sister city Comayaguela, from which it is separated by the Choluteca River; the 1936 constitution merged the two into a Central District, and the 1982 constitution still defines that district as the permanent national capital.
The city is Honduras's largest and its political and administrative centre, hosting 25 foreign embassies and 16 consulates.
Locals commonly shorten the name to Tegus.
