About Suva

Suva has been the capital of Fiji since 1877, when the capital was moved here from Levuka, whose cramped site left no room to grow; the colonial administration completed the transfer in 1882.

Levuka, on the island of Ovalau, was the main European settlement and the capital of Fiji until the decision to move to Suva in 1877. The administration finished relocating in 1882.

Suva is Fiji's major port and the centre of its largest metropolitan area, as well as its political and economic hub.

Counting the neighbouring towns of Lami, Nasinu and Nausori, the built-up area around Suva holds roughly 330,000 people, over a third of Fiji's population; the strip excluding Lami is known as the Suva-Nausori corridor.
